HOW IT STARTED
What was the impetus for this operation? Well it started as an idea to compost in the traditional windrow composting setup for fruit and vegetable wastes from restaurants and grocery stores. After taking into consideration the cost, planning and size of a compost pad as well as heavy equipment necessary to manage it, it felt like a big and expensive gamble. Add to that the uncertainty of how such an operation would be received, the idea was tabled.
A permaculture book became the turning point for the food scrap management strategy. The use of black soldier fly larvae in permaculture keeps the food resources on a farm in a circle, feeding the food scraps to the larvae and then feeding the larvae to either poultry or fish. The old food becomes food for future food. And so the name Full Circle Bioconversion was created and couldn't feel more fitting.
As for my own background, professionally I worked as a graphic designer at a couple of newspapers. Ultimately, I didn't feel that the world needed another graphic designer. There are plenty who are more talented than I. But when it comes to food, sustainability and creating new solutions for future generations, we can't have enough people working to better our current system for an improved future.
